Special Event W1FEA to Commemorate 90th Anniversary of WFEA, Merrimack, NH, June 10-11, 2022

photo of WFEA towerNew Hampshire Section Manager Pete Stohrer, W1FEA, (formerly K1PJS) is organizing a 90th anniversary commemoration of radio station WFEA with a special event operation using his call sign. The station will operate on June 10 and 11, 2022 from the WFEA transmitter site in Merrimack, New Hampshire.  Special QSL cards and certificates will be available for all contacts.

“Like many hams, Amateur Radio has provided a gateway to the field of electronics and ultimately to an occupation in broadcast engineering, employed by Saga Communications Inc, as Director of Engineering for stations WZID, WMLL and historic WFEA in Manchester. I also serve as Technical Director of NH Gospel Radio Inc. with stations WVNH in Concord and WANH in Meredith,” writes Stohrer on his QRZ.com page. 

WFEA operates on 1370 kHz. It was first licensed and on the air in 1932. The original Blaw Knox tower continues to radiate 90 years after installation.

Fox Hunt in Gales Ferry (CT), May 28, 2022

It’s Memorial Day weekend, which is a perfect time for a foxhunt!  As such, SECARS will be sponsoring its first foxhunt, which will occur on Saturday May 28 at 1 PM.  This will be an on-foot foxhunt at the Thompson Brook Preserve in Gales Ferry (765 Long Cove Road in Gales Ferry, https://avalonia.org/preserves/atkinson-family-preserve-thompson-brook-preserve).  We will have 7 fox boxes out.  These will be on the following frequencies:
 
146.335 – 1 mW – continuous transmitter – Fox H on our website
145.910 – 25 mW – continuous transmitter – Fox I on our website
146.585 – 0.5 W – nearly continuous transmitter – Fox J on our website
146.565 – 1 W – nearly continuous transmitter – Fox K on our website
147.455, on 3 seconds, off 3 seconds, Carrier only – Fox C on our website
147.42, no pl, touch tone 1 to activate – Tones and CW ID, 1 minute on time – new fox born recently.
 
I will be hunting for the last two foxes, which will be placed by Dave, K1DCT.  I will place the other foxes shortly before the hunt.  Bring your foxhunting gear for what will be a great time.  If you do not have gear and would like to learn, you can meet me at 757 Long Cove Rd. at 1 PM and hunt with me.  I will have a tape-measure Yagi and an attenuator.  Send me an e-mail at KE1IUMark@gmail.com if you would like to meet and hunt as a team.

Lobstercon2022! campground reservations have now been confirmed! We will be gathering at Thomas Point Beach & Campground on the weekend of July 8, 9 & 10 2022.

The 2022 event will be the 23th year that W1REX has hosted the QRP event at TPB&C! I have already reserved the group campsite for the 2022 event and set the dates so you have plenty of time to still plan your weekend getaway to Maine! I plan on coming up with a few special activities to make our awakening event from this pandemic very special and an event that you will not want to miss. If you have often thought about coming to Lobstercon but never got a round tuit, you have better make this one.

New England’s premiere QRP gathering, a weekend of QRP camping, BBQ eating, operating, socializing, lobster eating, prize winning, all round great QRP time. A $50.00 registration fee gets you wake-up coffee, juice, cereal, bagels and donuts ( if you wake up early enough) and 2 GIANT meals on Saturday: a BBQ lunch and FRESH Maine lobster dinner. Lobstercon lobsters are fresh out of the ocean for less than an hour before they go into the pot. YOU CAN TASTE THE DIFFERENCE! Do not forget to tell the Thomas Point Beach people that you are with the crazy radio gang. 2022 Camping fees are $10 per person/night in our group site.

The Group site does not have electricity or hookups. We do run extension cords to the closest power pole. Campers requiring electricity will be charged $5 per night. Regular park camping fee camping fee is $32 per camping unit /family of 2 adults & 2 children

It would be best if most camping reservations were made on-line through the TPB website.

Two CT Clubs Disband to Form the Southeastern Connecticut Amateur Radio Society

On Thursday, May 19, 2022, the Radio Amateur Society of Norwich (RASON) and the Tri-City Amateur Radio Club both voted to disband and create a new club, the Southeastern Connecticut Amateur Radio Society, SECARS!  These are exciting times!  The new club will have significantly greater membership, and we will be taking the best of both clubs to strengthen the amateur radio community in Southeastern CT.

Among our activities are Field Day, fox hunts, communications support for local community events, emergency preparedness and support, regular presentations

that feature technical talks and discussions of operating practice, a summer picnic and auction fundraisers.  To find out more and to join the club, please visit SECARS.org.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is in need of SAG and HAM support this year for their annual Bike MS: Cape Cod Getaway on June 25th & 26th. If you all are available to help that weekend or even one day please let me know! I will make sure that you get signed up ASAP and I get housing for you squared away. Also, if you are available for our Bike MS: Ride the Rhode on June 11th & 12th we could definitely use support there as well. If working both days for ether event housing can be provided. Some of you may have already gotten an email from the BAA but volunteer registration is open for the 2022 BAA 10K taking place on 06/26/22! There is a need for amateur radio volunteers so if you are free that day and interested please sign up. If you have volunteered at a BAA event in the past the process is very similar and you should see a banner once you log in. If you have not volunteered at a BAA event in the past follow these steps:

Go to https://www.baa.org/races/baa-10k/volunteer and follow the link to sign up for an Athletes’ Village account.
After creating your account and logging in you should see a 2022 B.A.A Volunteer Program banner with a button that says “To Volunteer Click Here”. Click the button
Fill out all the information in Steps 1 and 2
For Step 3 choose “General”
For Step 4 choose “Yes, I am an Amateur Radio Operator” and fill in your callsign and equipment

Candlewood ARA POTA Event, Lovers Leap State Park, New Milford CT, May 22, 2022

Members of the CARA club will be meeting Sunday May 22 around 9-9:30 AM at Lovers Leap State Park in New Milford, CT to activate K-1691.
 
There have been only 8 activations and 237 QSOs from the park, I made 1 and 42 QSOs  on 4/30/2022. It is an easy activation.
 
Again, let’s bring the newer members in and share the fun.
 
For those that will set up a station, I suggest you bring your portable radio set up, a small table & chair, a pop-up canopy, POTA signs, your logging equipment. As for lunch I suggest the we all bring a pot luck type lunch. I will bring a cooler with Ice, soda and water.  
 
Let have some fun.

RFI Troubleshooting Guide Adds Power Company Contacts Page

The RFI Troubleshooting Guide RFI Troubleshooting Guide – ARRL New England Division now has a list of the power company contacts for hams to report power line noise-related issues.  Hams are encouraged to contact New England Division RFI Teams prior to doing so to make the team aware of the issue, so that they can follow up if necessary.  Noise thought to be coming from power company hardware may actually be from another service on a power pole, like a leaking television cable, so try and gather as much information, with the help of the RFI team if needed, to understand the source of the noise.  We expect to need to update the maps and contact information from time to time as service areas and company relationships change over time.  If you see that we need to change some information, please let us know at k1ui@nediv.arrl.org.
