Amateur Volunteers Sought for AngelRide, Essex, CT, May 28, 2022

Greetings!

After a two year COVID hiatus, AngelRide (in-person) is coming back strong for 2022! As most of you know, AngelRide now supports the Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp! The one-day AngelRide Classic will take place on Saturday, 28 May 2022 (Memorial Day Weekend).
 
Beginning this year the AngelRide route has been moved from ARES Region 4 to ARES Region 2.  The Metric Century (100 km) ride is roughly a “figure 8” that will begin at Essex Fire Department. The middle of the “figure 8” (Rest Stops 1 & 3) will be at Chester Hose Co.  The top of the “figure 8” (Rest Stop 2) will be at St James Parish Hall in Higganum.
 
The Region 4 ARES Mobile Comms Unit (MCU4) will be deployed to the Essex Fire House and serve as the Net Control Station. I am looking for ham radio operators to setup at the two Rest Stops as well as at key locations (TBD) along the route. If you are interested and available to participate in this very worthwhile charity event, please advise by return email.
 
See the two attachments for more info. I will share additional details about the ride as they become available. 
 
Note to Dan KB1MMR – with your permission, we would like to use your 2m & 440 KB1MMR repeaters that have good coverage for the ride route. I’ll be in touch to discuss!

Groton (MA) Road Race, May 15, 2022

** Groton Road Race scheduled for Sunday May 15, 2022 **

The Groton Road Race (Groton MA) is back!  May 15 will be the 29th running of this event. The Groton Police Department and the Race Director have again requested our Amateur Radio communication support this year.

We will be supporting the two main races in this event; the 5k and 10k. The communications support that we provide starts around 9am and we should be done shortly after 1pm.

The event committee is not requiring volunteers to be vaccinated or to wear masks.  You are certainly welcome to wear a mask and/or maintain distancing if you wish.

The Groton Road Race continues to be a major event for Amateur Radio in North Central Massachusetts.  Those of you who have joined us in previous years know that the runners sincerely appreciate our presence.  Many say so as they run past.  This event is so large that Police Departments and other public safety organizations from several communities come to assist the Groton PD.  Part of our role is to provide the communications from the Groton Police to these out-of-town officers who come to help with this event.

Contributing to the public good is one of the reasons Amateur Radio exists.  Our public service events are a key opportunity for us to show our colors, volunteer our skills and equipment, and demonstrate why it is in the public’s interest to continue to allocate precious RF spectrum to our the Amateur Radio Service.  The Groton Road Race is a low-stress event and a great way to gain more experience with the public service aspect of amateur radio.  Please consider joining us on the 15th.

If you are a new Ham or know of another Ham who is interested in helping at these events but unsure of what is expected or what equipment may be needed, please do not hesitate to introduce the to me.

The Race Committee and the Groton Police Department repeatedly praise and express their appreciation for our assistance in providing communications for this event for many years.  if you are interested in joining the communication crew this year, please let me know.

National Hurricane Conference Virtual Amateur Radio Workshop, April 11, 2022

On Monday 4/11/22, there will be the Virtual Amateur Radio Workshop for the 2022 National Hurricane Conference. The sessions will run between 1030 AM-1200 PM EDT, 130-300 PM EDT, and 330-500 PM EDT. The details on the presenters and presentation topics and Zoom dial-in details can be found here:
 
 
We will be recording the session and uploading it to YouTube as well. We look forward to seeing folks who can attend our virtual workshop.

Rocky Neck Relay Race, Communicators Needed, East Lyme, CT, April 24, 2022

Communicators needed! 

The 2022 Rocky Neck Relay Race is scheduled for Sunday, April 24, 2022. This is a new event for us this year. The course is all within Rocky Neck State Park. The race starts at 8 AM and the award ceremony at noon. Report time at the Region 4 Mobile Communications Unit will be 645 AM to 7:30 AM.

Attached are the maps for the trail and road course. The road course is all within Rocky Neck State Park. . I am working on the Comm Plan that will have checkpoint numbers. In the mean t5ime the checkpoint locations are marked on the maps with big yellow stars. 

This is a GREAT opportunity to introduce newly licensed amateurs or persons interested in getting licensed to public service.  Please ask someone to join you!

Spring 2022 Boston/Norton SKYWARN Training Sessions

Due to COVID-19 concerns, SKYWARN training classes will again be held virtually. The SKYWARN training sessions will occur on three weeknights and two weekends. The weeknight sessions will be taught by NWS forecasters and the weekend sessions taught by amateur radio operators.

Those that are interested in becoming a SKYWARN Spotter or existing spotters refreshing their SKYWARN training can take an optional quiz and that will get a new individual their SKYWARN spotter number and count as refreshing your training for existing spotters.

Attached is the information for our first event of the year down here in Westerly.  Due to Deaths, moves and job changes it looks like I could use a few more hams.  <…>  It is a short event, so, I understand many not wanting to travel any long distance with the price of gas what it is.

Attached is the information on this year’s Clamdigger Road Race.  Please reserve the date, Sunday 24 April 2022, to help with the event.  Last  year’s turnout left us  wanting for help on the course.

Last Call for Boston Marathon Volunteers, Deadline is February 18, 2022

The Boston Marathon Amateur Radio team is still in need of about 50 additional volunteers to fill our nearly 300 assignments.  The BAA volunteer registration deadline is this Friday, February 18 at 5:00 PM EST.  The BAA has told us that this is a firm deadline for this year.

If you are still undecided, we encourage you to register now; you can discuss any questions you may have with us and if you decide this is not for you this year you can withdraw between now and the end of March.

If you have not previously volunteered and want to chat about what we do, what is expected of us, and what equipment you might need, please do not hesitate to drop us an email.

Amateur Radio Volunteers Wanted for Hartford Marathon Foundation O’Niantic 5k Race, March 19, 2022

Connecticut ARES Region 4 and local amateur radio operators have been requested once again to assist with the 2022 Hartford Marathon Foundation O’Niantic 5K Race on Saturday March 19, 2022. 
 
Report time will be between 8:15 and 8:30 AM at the East Lyme Town Hall Parking Lot.  Most checkpoints are released by 11 AM. 
The Kids Wee Mile races start at 9:00 AM, and the 5K starts at approximately 9:45 AM. 
 
This is a great low-key event for new amateur radio operators, or new to volunteering at checkpoints!  Feel free to recruit!  
 
Please let me know if you are available to volunteer for this event.
