This is a story about Tallmadge Elementary School’s participation in a once-in-a-lifetime ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station) school contact. You’ll learn about their amazing journey leading up to the amateur radio contact with an astronaut on the International Space Station. The excitement of the entire experience was shared not just by the students, but included faculty, parents, community, and local amateur radio operators. You will also learn how to begin the process of submitting your own ARISS contact proposal.

HAM-CON ON-LINE is Saturday February 27, 2021

Same great forums, flea market and attendees as the live show, with the exception that you don’t have to drive in winter! And it costs ….. nothing!

If you are planning to attend, please go to the HAM-CON site and register to attend and to be in the running for door prizes. While there, you can check out the lineup of forums running all day.

You will need a free Zoom account on your computer to fully take part in all the activities. But if you are not set up for this, you can still see many of the forums on YouTube.

HAM-CON is different than other On-Line events in that we have selling rooms and chat rooms where you can do some shopping or else meet up with pals you haven’t see in a while. Oh, and if you have stuff to sell, please consider being a vendor. All you need is a table full of stuff and a camera.

So far, we have a couple hundred folks from all over the country registered. We’d like to see more of those rare Vermont hams too!

So go to http://www.ham-con.org and register. Also, if you check this site Tuesday night after 6PM you can join our HAM-CON discussion where you can test out your Zoom settings and ask questions. If you are already registered, that’s GREAT!

SHELBURNE, VERMONT – One-on-one talks with fellow amateur radio operators as far away as Moscow are now firmly on the horizon for a Shelburne man.

The erection of two antenna towers on Zachary Mangenello’s rural property on Dorset Street — a source of contention with his neighbors for at least a year — was approved by the Telecommunications Review Board this week…

MA Ham Operator License Plate Update, February 18, 2021

I received my new Ham Operator plates from the RMV this past Saturday, February 13, 2021.
 
A side note for anyone who has ordered plates–  All plate are retro dated back to the application processing date (mine was December 8th) and and you should be aware that they automatically cancel the old registration number 60 days after the processing date and request you dispose of current plates locally by recycling them.  This could lead to a gap between plates if there is a delivery delay. 
 
My plates only expired 5 days before I received my new AI1G plates because of the processing delays.
 
So, be on the lookout for your new plates in the mail.

ARRL Board Considers Plan to Cover New $35 FCC Fee for Some Young Members

ARRL logoAt its Annual Meeting in January, the ARRL Board of Directors considered a motion to offer a new plan that would pay the new but not-yet-implemented $35 FCC application fee for a limited number of new radio amateurs younger than age 18 who, at the time of testing, belonged to an ARRL Affiliated 501(c)(3) charitable organization and passed their tests through an ARRL VEC-sponsored exam session. The proposal called for reducing the VEC fee for these candidates to $5. The initial proposal came from ARRL Southeastern Division Director Mickey Baker, N4MB. Other Board members offered subsidiary motions. Supporters said the purpose behind the motion was to ameliorate the potential financial hardship the pending FCC application fee posed on certain minors applying for their first license, and to encourage new youth membership. New England ACC Group Meets Online, February 14, 2021

ARRL Affiliated Club logoAffiliated Club Coordinators, Section Managers, and other section staff from New England met on Sunday, February 14, 2021 to discuss the status of ARRL affiliated radio clubs and to share ideas on improving them. Dubbed “New England ACC” or NEACC, the group plans to hold quarterly meetings. They’ve established a groups.io listserv for discussion in between meetings.

KD1OM Appointed as Maine Section Emergency Coordinator

I am pleased to announce that Steve Jordan, KD1OM, has accepted the position as Section Emergency Coordinator for Maine. Please welcome him aboard in his new position.

Steve will be a great asset for the State of Maine. He comes from some great knowledge of communications having been in the police department. With Steve’s guidance I am sure that Maine’s amateur communications will become strong and be set for years to come.
