My very first official act as Maine Section Manager for the ARRL, the national association for amateur radio, was to award an amazing Maine public servant and ham radio operator with a Certificate of Merit today at Dave’s Diner in Gardner. There will be card checking for ARRL awards and outgoing bureau service available at the New England Division Convention at HamXposition on September 11, according to W1 QSL Bureau Co-Manager Eric Williams, KV1J. Initially, plans called for the booth to be set up next to the ARRL display but instead it will be located in the corridor.

Eric stresses that applicants must fill out the application process online before the show. “We are just collecting the cards for the ARRL so please give them to us with the funds etc. as if you were mailing them to Newington,” writes KV1J.
Members of the ARRL Board of Directors, staff, and politicians were in attendance for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at ARRL Headquarters in Newington, Connecticut on July 15, 2021. The re-opening coincided with the bi-annual Board of Directors meeting in Windsor, Connecticut.
Attendees included: U.S. Representative John B. Larson of Connecticut’s 1st congressional district; State Sen. Matt Lesser; State Rep. Gary Turco; Beth DelBuono, Mayor of Newington; and Town managers; Glenn Field, KB1GHX, Warning Coordination Meteorologist at NOAA / National Weather Service in Taunton, Massachusetts; a local American Red Cross representative. New England Director Fred Hopengarten, K1VR, and Vice Director Phil Temples, K9HI, were among the attending board members.

The Norfolk County Radio Association (Massachusetts, today W1AGR) was founded in 1921, and has been continuously active since then. It is an ARRL-affiliated club. At the suggestion of Phil Temples, K9HI, my Vice Director, at this week’s ARRL Board of Directors meeting I will present a motion, to be seconded by Ria Jairam, N2RJ, the Hudson Division Director. The motion will recognize NCRA’s 100th anniversary.

Are you looking for that perfect, post Field Day ham radio activity? Then working the 13 Colonies special event stations is perfect for you!
Each July 1 through July 7, the 13 original colony states activate on all bands and modes for you to work them. Plus you can chase the three extra 13 Colonies stations where there is one each in Philadelphia, England and France.
This is a very fun activity. The action the first few days can create some overwhelming pile ups. If you can not get through, please be patient and try again later or another day. All the ops are trying to work everyone they can hear. They want to work you and will make every effort to do so.
If you work them all, it’s called a “clean sweep.” You can earn a certificate by sending $5 to KU2US. You can also send an SASE to each of the states to get back a unique QSL card. Each year there is a different theme and a new card is created. Combining the certificate with the QSL cards makes for some fancy wall paper!
But you can receive a certificate by working just one of the 13 colony stations. You do not need a clean sweep to get a certificate.
This year Massachusetts will be active once again as K2H. There are 20 operators all over the state. You’ll hear us on CW, SSB, FT8 and other modes. Work us and send in your SASE QSL request to the info on the K2H QRZ.com page.

The Stratford Amateur Radio Club‘s “K1TMW Alan G. Thorpe Scholarship Award” for 2021 has been awarded to Kaleb Ruddle, KN4JGJ, Lawrenceburg, Connecticut. The announcement was made by the award administrator and President emeritus, Bob Betts, N1KPR. The ARRL Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2021 scholarship awards. A number of those recipients are from New England:
The Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC) Scholarships, $10,000
The Byron Blanchard, N1EKV, Memorial Scholarship, $500
The FEMARA Scholarship, $2,000 each
The New England Amateur Radio Festival (NEAR-Fest) Scholarship, $1,500
The Yankee Clipper Contest Club, Inc. Youth Scholarship, $2,000
There were 122 awards this year, totaling $564,250. The full list of scholarship recipients can be found on the ARRL website.

WORKED ALL VERMONT AWARD
PURPOSE: To encourage communications between amateur radio operators outside of Vermont, and amateurs in all counties of Vermont, and to encourage a high level of technical and operating skills from other amateurs in working all Vermont counties.
RULES: Work at least 13 out of the 14 Vermont counties. Any band or modes, or combination thereof, except repeaters. No restriction on time limits. (Vermont amateurs may qualify if they remain in one county.)
VERIFICATION: Send list of calls, dates, and counties worked, verified by two other licensed amateurs that have seen the QSL cards for the counties worked. Or include photocopies of the front and back of the QSL cards along with the aforementioned list. Do not send cards.
AWARD: A personalized certificate signed by the CVARC President.
COST: $5.00 to cover cost of certificate, postage and processing.

A Taunton, MA amateur is among twelve US Army Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS) volunteers being honored with gold-level recognition for the President’s Volunteer Service Award for 2020.
Bob Mims, WA1OEZ, the former Director for Region One (New England) along with eleven other award recipients will receive a letter signed by the President of the United States, a certificate of achievement, and a presidential volunteer service lapel pin. Volunteer awards are based on the certifying organization’s recommendation and the number of documented volunteer hours for the year.

The Quarter Century Wireless Association, Inc. has announced its Memorial Scholarships winners. Among the recipients are: Catherine Hong, KC1MFU, who attends the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
“Catherine Hong, KC1MFU […] is a sophomore at MIT, double majoring in Mechanical Engineering (design concentration) and a Joint degree in Comparative Media Studies & Brain and Cognitive Science. She wants to be a conscious creator, imbuing objects and experiences with functional and/or narrative value. To do so, she must understand how people find meaning and interpret the world around them, how society shapes and is shaped by media & technologies, and how to technically plan, design, and create the ideas she imagines.
