K1EIC Honored by the State of Connecticut for Service to Higher Education

photo of Betsey Doane, K1EICFormer Connecticut Section Manager Betsey Doane, K1EIC, of Shelton, Connecticut, will be honored by the State of Connecticut for her work in accessibility and inclusion in higher education.

According to Barb Lombardi, K1EIR,  “My sister found out that an award will be named after her for her work with the State higher education services for accessibility and inclusion. It will be ‘The Betsey Doane Innovation for Accessibility and Inclusion Award’ given [annually] to a faculty member in a State college or community college who has given or contributed the most to access and inclusion.”

Doane, a retired mathematics and computer science professor, is also active in her local Rotary club as well as the Chamber of Commerce.

KB1TCD Awarded Certificate of Merit

“On behalf of the Maine ARRL Section, I am happy to present this Certificate of Merit to you for your outstanding contribution to Maine amateur radio, especially your support for emergency communications.”

Douglas has “steadfastly served” as the net control station for the Maine Emergency Net on 3940 kHz on Sundays.

W1OP Visits W1AW for 100th Celebration

The Providence Radio Association, W1OP, visited ARRL Headquarters and W1AW on Thursday December 9, 2021, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of their club’s affiliation with ARRL. Accompanied by Bob Beaudet, W1YRC, the Rhode Island Section Manager, the club visited headquarters and met with David Minster, NA2AA, ARRL CEO.

They displayed their original affiliation certificate signed by the “Old Man” himself Hiram Percy Maxim. Minster presented them with a new certificate commemorating their 100 years. They then visited W1AW and after lunch operated the memorial station. It was noted that even though there are several clubs around the country at the 100 year mark they are still rare and ARRL wants to recognize them for their continued hard work.

QSL Card Checking and Outgoing Bureau Services Available at HamXposition

photo of QSL cardsThere will be card checking for ARRL awards and outgoing bureau service available at the New England Division Convention at HamXposition on September 11, according to W1 QSL Bureau Co-Manager Eric Williams, KV1J. Initially, plans called for the booth to be set up next to the ARRL display but instead it will be located in the corridor.

“We will also be accepting cards for the ARRL Outgoing Bureau at the booth. Please see the instructions on the ARRL web for sending your cards and the fee structures  There is also a simple form to submit with your cards.  See

Eric stresses that applicants must fill out the application process online before the show. “We are just collecting the cards for the ARRL so please give them to us with the funds etc. as if you were mailing them to Newington,” writes KV1J.

ARRL Re-Opening Ceremony Featured Dignitaries, Full Board and Newington Staff, July 15, 2021

Members of the ARRL Board of Directors, staff, and politicians were in attendance for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at ARRL Headquarters in Newington, Connecticut on July 15, 2021.  The re-opening coincided with the bi-annual Board of Directors meeting in Windsor, Connecticut. 

Attendees included:  U.S. Representative John B. Larson of Connecticut’s 1st congressional district; State Sen. Matt Lesser; State Rep. Gary Turco; Beth DelBuono, Mayor of Newington; and Town managers; Glenn Field, KB1GHX, Warning Coordination Meteorologist at NOAA / National Weather Service in Taunton, Massachusetts; a local American Red Cross representative.  New England Director Fred Hopengarten, K1VR, and Vice Director Phil Temples, K9HI, were among the attending board members.

Norfolk County Radio Association (W1AGR)

The Norfolk County Radio Association (Massachusetts, today W1AGR) was founded in 1921, and has been continuously active since then. It is an ARRL-affiliated club. At the suggestion of Phil Temples, K9HI, my Vice Director, at this week’s ARRL Board of Directors meeting I will present a motion, to be seconded by Ria Jairam, N2RJ, the Hudson Division Director. The motion will recognize NCRA’s 100th anniversary.

K2H, Massachusetts 13 Colonies Special Event, July 1-7, 2021

Are you looking for that perfect, post Field Day ham radio activity? Then working the 13 Colonies special event stations is perfect for you!

Each July 1 through July 7, the 13 original colony states activate on all bands and modes for you to work them. Plus you can chase the three extra 13 Colonies stations where there is one each in Philadelphia, England and France.

This is a very fun activity. The action the first few days can create some overwhelming pile ups. If you can not get through, please be patient and try again later or another day. All the ops are trying to work everyone they can hear. They want to work you and will make every effort to do so.

If you work them all, it’s called a “clean sweep.” You can earn a certificate by sending $5 to KU2US. You can also send an SASE to each of the states to get back a unique QSL card. Each year there is a different theme and a new card is created. Combining the certificate with the QSL cards makes for some fancy wall paper!

But you can receive a certificate by working just one of the 13 colony stations. You do not need a clean sweep to get a certificate.

This year Massachusetts will be active once again as K2H. There are 20 operators all over the state. You’ll hear us on CW, SSB, FT8 and other modes. Work us and send in your SASE QSL request to the info on the K2H QRZ.com page.

Stratford (CT) ARC Announces 2021 Scholarship Recipient

Stratford ARC logoThe Stratford Amateur Radio Club‘s “K1TMW Alan G. Thorpe Scholarship Award” for 2021 has been awarded to Kaleb Ruddle, KN4JGJ, Lawrenceburg, Connecticut. The announcement was made by the award administrator and President emeritus, Bob Betts, N1KPR. 
 
The Stratford ARC was formed over 60 years ago and is an ARRL affiliated club providing service to the local community and enhancing amateur radio.

The ARRL Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2021 scholarship awards. A number of those recipients are from New England:

The Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC) Scholarships, $10,000

The Byron Blanchard, N1EKV, Memorial Scholarship, $500

The FEMARA Scholarship, $2,000 each
