Holiday greetings to all ARRL members throughout Maine!

I wanted to let you all know about a few things coming up very soon.

On New Year’s Eve and Day, if you are not one to party through the night, then you might want to break out your straight key or bug and join in the fun of ARRL Straight Key Night (SKN). It is a lot of fun. I will be on mostly 80 meters, so if you hear me calling CQ SKN, have mercy on my slow copy and “PLS QRS,”  hi hi!  If you are a Technician class licensed amateur radio operator, don’t forget, you have CW privileges on parts of 80, 40, and 15 meters!

New Year’s Day is also Kids Day! Introduce your child, or a relative’s or friend’s child to amateur radio. Let them use your rig to make a contact, or if you hear some kids on the air, have a friendly QSO with them! You can find out more details on both SKN and Kids Day on the contest calendar of the ARRL web site. If you do participate in Kids Day, please let me know about it. Finally, on Sunday, Jan 9 at 1600 (4PM) on or near 3.840 MHz LSB, Maine ARRL Districts 3 and 4 are conducting a special 75 meter net to test the pathways between their respective counties and to get to know each other. (Hancock, Knox, Waldo, Washington, Aroostook, Penobscot, Piscataquis and Somerset Counties).  Anyone with general class privileges is welcome to check in, whether you are from Aroostook County, or even from York County in District one!

Hi everyone. Yet another year over. (Just about.) The silly season is upon us. I do hope everyone and their families have a happy, healthy, safe Holiday Season and 2022. Clubs have been planning their festivities this month and no meetings. So, it’s been a little quiet this month.

Well, it has been well publicized of who the winner of the New England Director is in Fred, AB1OC. I hope our section will support him and his mission to bringing a fresh perspective to Newington and New England. He has a lot of great ideas and will be looking for assistance in bringing this to fruition.

The Mohawk Club is currently underway in building their club station in the Gardner Police building. The construction of a Rohn 45 tower and running cables for rotors and antennas has started. Hopefully by Spring it will be fully functional.

Also, a bit of news, as of Nov. 19 I am now AA1SE. This was a change I have been thinking of for a while. Problem is this change is as bad as moving! All the stuff I have to update. This call will be better in contests and will play nicely when I crack CW.

I guess if there is anything I may want for Christmas is 1) a greater readership of this website, 2) Hams to participate in activities especially in mentoring, licensing, and their clubs and section. As I start my new term in January, I may have a full plate as programs are likely launching to promote all the before mentioned items from different sources. The League is listening, our voices are getting heard. Your part will make a difference!

That’s about all I have for this month. Just a reminder to clubs that put out newsletters to send a copy to clubs@arrl.org so they see what’s happening out there.

The ARRL has appointed me as interim Maine Section Manager effective December 1, 2021 as Bob Gould, N1WJO, has resigned for personal reasons. I join with all of you in thanking him for his service to our section.

During the next few months I will focus on expanding Maine’s amateur radio community by enticing more people with the exciting and fun aspects of amateur radio. Grabbing the attention of the youth among our population is a high priority of mine, and my Assistant Section Managers, Affiliated Club Coordinator, and Youth Coordinator will help me in this goal. Shoring up our Amateur Radio Emergency Service around the state and filling the vacancies is also a top priority. In the coming days I will be making a variety of field service appointments to help in this endeavor.

Please join me in extending sincere appreciation to George Szadiz K1GDI, and Cory Golob KU1U, who have served in leadership positions but will be handing over the reigns to new appointees.

Bradley Brown, Jr, KC1JMH is replacing George K1GDI as Section Youth Coordinator. Brad is already very active in youth organizations such as the boy scouts and cup scouts. He is den leader of the local cub scout troop. He is an IT guy and embraces new modes and technologies, and is the perfect fit for the pivotal role of SYC. Brad is also president of the Wireless Society of Southern Maine.

Dennis Bosley, WA1URS, has accepted the role of Section Traffic Manager effective in January, relieving Cory Golob, KU1U. Thank you to both of these hams for taking on this important role. Cory will continue to serve as Assistant Section Manager. Dennis is an enthusiastic traffic handler, Friday net control station for the Maine Seagull Net, and is also a District Emergency Coordinator.

I can’t express enough gratitude to Rod Scribner, KA1RFD, who for decades has served both the Maine ARRL section and the State of Maine in many ways. Rod has served as Maine’s Section Emergency Coordinator, Net Manager, ham radio instructor, volunteer examiner, and so much more and has brought uncounted number of people into this great hobby. Rod is relinquishing his longtime position of State Government Liaison to Peter Hatem, KC1HBM.

Peter is currently an ASM for District 1, and VP of the Wireless Society of Southern Maine.  He is also a Maine licensed attorney since 2000, and was involved in 2019 to modify Maine’s handheld electronic device, while operating motor vehicles ban to except ham radios from the ban. He is also Net Manager for the Maine Dirigo Net, a DMR net on Maine Statewide Talkgroup that meets on Sundays at 1000 local on the NEDECN DMR system.  He is currently building out his ham shack above a new garage addition to his home in Scarborough.

Thank you Steve Curry, KD1O, for accepting the appointment as Affiliated Club Coordinator. His enthusiasm for amateur radio is a quality that is exactly what we need in an ACC. Steve is Treasurer of the Waldo County ARC.  Check out his QRZ page. Quite impressive!

The outgoing president of the Ellsworth Amateur Wireless Association, Jeff Hanscom, KA1DBE, will be replacing me as District 3 Assistant Section Manager. Jeff is one of the most enthusiastic and active amateur radio operators I know and he will prove to be of great value to our section’s leadership team.

There will be other appointments to Maine’s field services in the coming weeks. Your support and feedback are greatly appreciated. I wish you all a super holiday season! Thank you and 73.

Maine Section Manager Robert Gould, N1WJO has resigned for personal reasons. ARRL would like to thank Robert for his years of service and his dedication to amateur radio. He has been the Maine Section Manager since July 2020. Mike Walters, W8ZY, Field Services Manager has appointed Philip Duggan, N1EP, as Interim Section Manager to fill the remainder of the term effective December 1, 2021. Maine is scheduled to hold an election for a new Section Manager in April of 2022.

Congratulations to Western Massachusetts Incumbent Section Manager Ray Lajoie, AA1SE (ex-KB1LRL) who faced no opposition and was declared elected for a new two-year term beginning January 1, 2022. The full announcement from ARRL Bulletin 028 follows:

Fall ARRL Section Manager Election Results

The only contested seat for Section Manager (SM) in the Fall election cycle was in Kansas, where incumbent Ron Cowan, KB0DTI, of La Cygne, came out on top in the two-person race. Cowan outpolled challenger Lloyd Colston, of Arkansas City, 260 to 225. Ballots were counted on November 23 at ARRL Headquarters. Cowan has served as Kansas Section Manager since 2003. His new 2-year term will begin on January 1, 2022.

In Alabama, Roger Parsons, KK4UDU, of Mulga, will become the new Section Manager on January 1. Parsons was the only nominee for the position. He has been an Assistant Section Manager and a District Emergency Coordinator. Incumbent SM JVann Martin, W4JVM, who has served as the Alabama Section Manager since 2016, decided not to run for a new term.

In Michigan, Les Butler, W8MSP, of Gregory, will become the new Section Manager of Michigan when the new year arrives. He was the only nominee to submit a petition by the nomination deadline. Butler will succeed incumbent Michigan Section Manager Jim Kvochick, K8JK, whose job will take him out of the state early next year. Kvochick has been Michigan SM since 2018.

In Delaware, the Section Manager position remains open and a re-solicitation for nominees will be issued this winter for an 18-month term beginning on July 1, 2022. No nominating petitions were submitted before the deadline in September. Incumbent Section Manager Mark Stillman, KA3JUJ, is moving out of the Section early next year and could not run for another term after serving as Delaware SM since 2020.

These incumbent Section Managers faced no opposition and were declared elected for new terms: David Stevens, KL7EB (Alaska); Mike Patterson, N6JGA (East Bay); Bill Mader, K8TE (New Mexico); John Kitchens, NS6X (Santa Barbara); David Thomas, KM4NYI (Tennessee), and Raymond Lajoie, AA1SE (Western Massachusetts).

11/19/2021–The ARRL New England and Roanoke Divisions will have new Directors on January 1. The results of these three-way contested elections for Director were announced on November 19, after ballots were tallied at ARRL Headquarters.

In the New England Division, incumbent Fred Hopengarten, K1VR, received 1,054 votes, past Director Tom Frenaye, K1KI, received 1,026 votes, and challenger Fred Kemmerer, AB1OC, received 1,147 votes. Mr. Kemmerer was declared the winner.

In the Roanoke Division, incumbent George W. “Bud” Hippisley, W2RU, received 809 votes, past Director Dr. Jim Boehner, N2ZZ, received 1,612 votes, and challenger Marvin Hoffman, WA4NC, received 1,294 votes. Dr. Boehner was declared the winner.

All newly elected officials take office at noon on January 1, 2022.

By now you should have received your ballot to vote for your Division Director election.

Ballots are due in Newington by 11/19, so mailing them now is important given the issues being reported about the USPS.

Of the thousands of ballots mailed, we did receive reports of some ballots taking until the end of last week to arrive. This, again, is a reflection of the USPS and their treatment of bulk mail this year.

If you have NOT received your ballot, contact us TODAY or TOMORROW! We will get a replacement ballot out to you immediately via First Class mail.
